Experiencing any form of pain is enough to make a person feel miserable and uncomfortable. In the case of a sore and swollen throat, aside from the physical pain that you need to endure, you might also find it hard to accomplish simple tasks such as talking, eating and swallowing food, and even taking in fluids like water. Nobody deserves to be in pain and the good news is that there are sore throat remedies that can effectively address this particular health condition.

But before looking into sore throat remedies and other treatment options, knowing as much as you can about this health threat is a very practical thing to do.

Common Causes of Sore Throat

Sore throat is a common condition brought about by an inflammation in the throat. It may bring mild to extreme pain to the sufferer, and sometimes there are other symptoms that are associated with it.

Some of the possible causes of this condition may include the following:

1.      Bacterial infections – Bacteria strains of Streptococcus and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum are the possible roots of sore throat infection and pain among young adults. One of the most common telltale sign of bacterial sore throat infection is the presence of red rash.

2.      Viruses – Flu and mono viruses produce cold sores inside the throat and mouth. These viruses infect the throat that leads to soreness.

 3.      Cigarette or Tobacco Smoking

4.      Yeast Infection or oral thrush

5.      Sinus drainage

The following are some of the symptoms associated with sore throat: sneezing, runny nose, mild fever, hoarseness, bad breath, general fatigue, and lymph nodes. Sore throat remedies can help pacify the severity of the mentioned symptoms. Heartburn and acid reflux can also cause  sore throat. Due to reflux of stomach acid, it can cause inflammation of the esophagus, thus causing sore throat.

Common home remedies

Generally, most cases of sore throats go away on their own without the need for medication, except in the cases of strep throat. Some of the most efficient sore throat remedies that you can do at home are the following:

1.      Gargle with salt and cayenne pepper water

Have a glass of water at room temperature with you. Put in a pinch of rock salt and crushed cayenne peppers, and gargle using this mixture at least three times a day. This is very effective because salt and water have cleansing properties while cayenne peppers numb the nerves in your throat.

2.      Drink hot lemon tea

Squeeze lemons into a glass of hot water and make your own lemon tea. Lemons can kill microbes that cause the infection in your throat. You can also add honey, garlic, and ginger for added benefit.

Another possible cause of swollen throat is dryness. To address this, sit and turn your face over a bowl of hot water. Add salt or anti-viral essential oils like tea tree or eucalyptus and cover your head. Breathe in the steam and for sure you will feel better afterward. Do this at least twice a day.

Home sore throat remedies are effective and cost-efficient. The best part is that they are very easy to do. But before trying them out, make sure that you have your throat checked first and see if it is not strep throat since they require the use of antibiotic drugs.
